Commagene,
Civic coin of Samosata, 1st century BC.
Bronze, 19 mm, 6.88 g.
Samosat (also known as Sham(u)shat, now Samsat) is an ancient city in Commagene, located on the right bank of the Euphrates River. During the Achaemenid period, it was the center of the Armenian satrapy of Commagene and was likely referred to as Commagene. In the first half of the 3rd century BC, it became the capital of the united Kingdom of Sophene-Commagene and was renamed Samosat in honor of the Armenian king Samos I (Sham) of the Yervanduni (Orontid) dynasty. Under the reigns of Tigranes II the Great and Artavazd II, Samosat became part of the Kingdom of Greater Armenia. In 72 AD, the Roman Empire annexed Samosat (along with Commagene) into the province of Assyria.
