Kingdom of Commagene and Sophene
The Kingdoms of Commagene and Sophene emerged in the Hellenistic period as Armenian polities shaped by regional power shifts. Sophene, established in the 3rd century BC between ancient Armenia and Syria, was ruled by the Orontid dynasty until its incorporation into Tigranes the Great’s realm in the 1st century BC. Commagene, forming from 163 BC between the Taurus Mountains and the upper Euphrates, remained an autonomous Hellenistic-Armenian kingdom until annexed by Rome in 72 CE.
The coinage of both kingdoms reflects their royal authority, cultural identity, and Hellenistic artistic influences. Coins feature rulers’ portraits, dynastic symbols, deities, and inscriptions, functioning as currency, propaganda, and instruments of religious and diplomatic expression.
Our museum collection showcases silver and bronze coins that reveal the kingdoms’ political structures, economic practices, and cultural heritage, offering a tangible connection to the Armenian Hellenistic legacy for collectors, historians, and enthusiasts alike.
